As part of a year-long period of activities geared to celebrating the contributions of Africans across the diaspora, Ghana is staging an initiative called ‘The Year of Return’.
The Government-led initiative brings together organisations and activities designed to mark the passage of our ancestors. This post lists events in February geared towards showcasing that.
The African Culture and Wellness Festival (ACAWF) was created by Dr. Sharita Yazid – a naturopath, ceo of New Body Products Ghana and repatriate to Africa. A group of natural healers, master African dance/drum instructors and fitness experts were consulted to help create the festival.
The African Culture and Wellness Festival will light up the Aburi Botanical Gardens with expected 3,000 participants throughout the day featuring informative workshops, exhibitions and concert.

Also on Saturday 9 February, The African American Association of Ghana will stage a panel discussion entitled: Black Migration – Exploring our Roots and Beyond
*Proposed discussion topics include: Returnees: who they are and why they’ve come; Micro-communities and their role in Ghanaian society; and, The future of diasporans – a vested interest in development.

The Back2Africa Festival celebrates the US Black History Month during the last week of February through to Ghanaian Independence Day in the first week of March with a focus on the arts, and education. It connects African American and Ghanaian cultural art forms through live performances and educational service projects. The Festival provides school supplies and resources for Ghanaian school children in the Akuapem Region. Performances will stop off in Kumasi, Cape Coast, and Accra, and will feature The CrossRhodes, Black Alley Band and Farafina Kan.
